Umbrella bases and protective covers serve two different purposes, and both need to be matched to the umbrella rather than chosen by appearance alone. Alfresco Outdoors & Heating carries centrepost base options and protective covers for market and cantilever umbrellas, helping customers support the umbrella correctly in use and protect the canopy and frame when it is closed.

For centrepost umbrellas, base weight and mast compatibility should be checked against the canopy size and the manufacturer’s recommendation. Passing the pole through a dining table does not remove the need for a suitable base beneath it. Larger umbrellas generally require more support, and wind exposure can increase the importance of choosing the correct base rather than the lightest option.

Cantilever umbrellas use a different support system because the canopy sits away from the mast. Depending on the umbrella, this can involve resin ballast bases, weighted frames or a permanent bolt-down or in-ground fixing. A standard centrepost base is not a substitute for the approved cantilever support system.

Protective covers also need to match the umbrella style and closed dimensions. A cover that is too short or narrow will leave part of the canopy exposed and can be difficult to fit correctly. If you plan to add an umbrella light, check clamp size, power method and model compatibility separately.

Start with the exact umbrella model, then choose the approved base or fixing method and a cover sized for that umbrella. This gives the shade structure the support it needs while making storage and everyday care easier.
